Oh, You Don’t Have A Galaxy Nexus Yet? Because Woz Does.

woz_ics

Woz Spotting. It’s something of a tradition amongst tech circles — or, at least, amongst my particularly geeky tech circle. Any time someone spots Woz wozzin’ his way around the Valley, it feels weird not to tell everyone you know. It’s like spotting Kanye West, except instead of Kanye West it’s someone that people actually like.

While Woz spottings rarely bubble up to the pages of TechCrunch, today’s sighting is particularly neat: he was on the Google campus. Better yet, he apparently left with a phone that pretty much no one else in the US has yet: the Galaxy Nexus.

The photos, posted by Android UI Engineer Kirill Grouchnikov , show Wozniak holdin’ his Galaxy Nexus and what is said to be an Ice Cream Sandwich-themed shirt.

So, how’d Woz pull it off? All it took (besides, you know, helping to invent the modern personal computer) was a tweet. From yesterday:

Wozniak’s shiny new Nexus isn’t exactly a world exclusive — they started shipping in the UK about 24 hours ago. In the US, however, the Nexus is still limited to Googlers/Samsungers and a handful of lucky press folk (yes, including one of our own). There’s still no concrete word of a local release date.

Now, if someone could tell me where to get one of those ICS shirts…

Android Global: South Korea Second Only To U.S. In App Downloads

Screen shot 2011-11-16 at 9.23.24 PM

Research firm research2guidance this morning published a report that offers key findings from an analysis of mobile app trends in the Android Market. The first point is perhaps not so surprising: Although we think of Android as having significant global reach as a mobile operating system, the U.S. remains (by far) the largest market for Android apps. According to the study, with over 3.49 billion total downloads as of September 2011 and with 50 percent of Android app downloads (to date) originating at home, the U.S. is dominating the Android app market.

However, the research firm is quick to point out that, although the U.S. leads, there is some saturation happening here, while other markets abroad have come to represent significant potential growth areas — and hotbeds of activity. In fact, (though this may not be news, it doesn’t seem to be widely covered in the U.S.), South Korea has the second largest market in terms of app downloads — even though it lags behind the U.S. with a small-ish 9 percent market share. In fact, to date, South Korea had the highest number of total app downloads after the U.S., at 603 million.

South Korea has relatively high Android smartphone penetration and a high number of app downloads (per user). According to research2guidance Co-founder Markus Pohl, South Korea’s growing share is supported by the country’s extensive IT infrastructure, which not only is known for its high speed and extensive coverage, but also for being fairly inexpensive, around $0.45 per Mbs compared to $11 in the U.K., for example. (South Korea is also home to major OEMs, like Samsung.)

South Korea is followed by the U.K., Germany, France, and Japan — all of which are currently tallying over 20 million downloads per month. And, what’s more, the study shows that users based in the largest Android markets are not always the most active app downloaders. User download behavior varies widely between markets, but it seems that potential “cash cow” markets are to be found in, perhaps, unexpected places.

Sweden, for example, has a relatively low market share (and low smartphone penetration) compared to the rest of the world, but it has the highest average monthly app downloads per user — at a rate of over 5 apps per user per month. This is compared to the average user in major Android markets, which downloads 2 to 3 applications per month.

Obviously, higher average downloads per user show the market’s rate of absorption and growth potential, as higher numbers can indicate the society’s openness towards new apps and the fact that total app downloads in these countries could increase with less marketing efforts compared to countries with less active users, Pohl said.

On the other hand, Russia and China have very low Android smartphone penetration rates and very low app downloads per user. Granted, while a much lower rate of downloads per user might show that these markets aren’t yet ready for Android apps to really take off, the relatively young target market and their population size could have significant impact on app market development in these countries, and Pohl sees them becoming huge Android adopters in the near future.

As to apps in the Android market seen as a whole, over the past few months, the report finds, the number of apps has grown “faster than ever”. Every week publishers are releasing 11,000 new apps to the market, compared to an average of 7,500 during the summer. At the end of October, for example, the number of total apps was 365,404 — a growth of over 40K total apps since Robin wrote about the market less than a month ago.

Of the total apps, the share of paid apps dropped to 32.4 percent, as “publishers are increasingly aware that Android users are unwilling to pay for downloads”, which is, in turn, catalyzing the adoption of in-app billing and advertising. Furthermore, in
 October
,
 developers
 charged
 an average of $3.06
 for
 paid
apps, and prices ranged from $0.99 to $14.87.

Modern Warfare 3 sells less than Black Ops in UK sales charts

The latest Call Of Duty has enjoyed the highest-grossing opening weekend of any movie, album or game ever in the UK – although it actually sold slightly less copies than Black Ops to do so.
Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 - scoring a headshot on the charts

Since it’s already been confirmed as the biggest entertainment launch in history there are no prizes for guessing what’s top of the UK sales charts this week. But, although the game sold much more than Black Ops in the US its UK debut is behind that of its predecessor.

Modern Warfare 3 sold just under 2 million units in the five days from Tuesday to Saturday, down 1.6 per cent on Black Ops. Its revenues were more than 1.5 per cent more though, at £83.1 million, making it the highest-grossing opening week of all time for any entertainment title in the UK.

Incredibly that includes the opening weekend box office for the last four Harry Potter films combined. Add in Black Ops and the two games have made more than the opening weekend box office of all eight Harry Potter games combined (the Harry Potter examples are ChartTrack’s not ours, we don’t know why they’re picking on them).

As usual the Xbox 360 saw the majority of sales at 59 per cent, with the PlayStation 3 on 40 per cent (down from 42 per cent for Black Ops). The missing 1 per cent presumably accounts for the PC and Nintendo DS versions.

Thanks to the insanity of this year’s Christmas rush last week was also the biggest week ever for the UK games industry, which raked in £120.8 million in revenues, easily trumping 2010′s best week of £113.8 million.

That’s largely thanks to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim launching at the same time, albeit on the traditional Friday rather than Modern Warfare 3′s Tuesday. The game enjoyed Bethesda’s biggest ever opening week, more than twice that of Fallout: New Vegas and enough to make the game the fifth biggest launch of the year (behind Modern Warfare 3, FIFA 12, Battlefield 3 and Gears Of War 3).

There were no other prominent new entries last week, with every other game running scared from Modern Warfare 3 and Skyrim – all except kid’s game Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo that is. Most gamers will probably never even have heard of it before but the social network for kids is big business and this first Nintendo DS game debuted as high as number seven in the multiformat chart and number 10 in the individual formats chart.

The surprisingly good Tintin movie tie-in also popped into the multiformat top 40 at number 19, while Wii Party was a re-entry at number 10 thanks to being bundled with the new Wii console ‘Family Edition’.

Call of Duty sets record in video game industry

Activision Blizzard’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 racked up more than $400 million in sales on its first day in stores in North America and the United Kingdom, setting a video game industry record. Activision’s biggest holiday title sold 6.5 million units in a single day after going on sale early this week, surpassing last year’s record of 5.6 million units or $360 million in sales. The version of the game released last year, called “Call of Duty: Black Ops”, went on to rake in $1 billion in less than two months. But Activision shares closed 2 percent lower on a day the market was up, suggesting investors doubt it can sustain this sort of momentum in coming years for its biggest console game.

Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia said the first-day pop came as no surprise to Wall Street. “If Activision had sold 8 million units, that would have been a surprise, but investors are already thinking up the next catalyst for Activision,” Bhatia said.

Chief Executive Bobby Kotick told Reuters in an interview on Friday the company will be able to expand the “Call of Duty” franchise by offering fans new game content each month over the Internet, and having them pay for it with annual subscriptions. Along with the console game, Activision is releasing “Call of Duty Elite,” a subscription service that costs $50 annually and offers extra online content, including apps for mobile devices. “What you’re likely to see is a shift over time in the whole economic model for these kinds of games. It looks more like ‘World of Warcraft’ than anything else,” he said referring to the company’s other big franchise.

Players of the fantasy role-playing game “World of Warcraft” pay Activision Blizzard each month to play the game, which creates a steady revenue stream. The franchise generated $1 billion in revenue for the company last year and is closely watched by analysts.

Activision shares fell earlier this week when the company reported it had lost 800,000 World of Warcraft players, overshadowing the company’s better-than-expected earnings forecast for the year. Shares of Activision, the largest U.S. video game company, closed 2.08 percent or 27 cents lower at $12.71 Friday on the Nasdaq.

We first got wind of Sony’s PlayStation Suite SDK back at the Tokyo Game Show in September, but the company just opened up the application process for a closed beta test, letting Windows XP and Windows 7 users in the US, UK and Japan submit their credentials for early access. Those getting the nod from Sony will be able to develops apps for use on the PS Vita, which is set to hit in February, along with thePS Suite – that “hardware-neutral” framework that’ll allow access from non-PlayStation branded products, including the Xperia Play, Tablet S and Tablet P, with the potential for third-party devices to come as well. The SDK uses the C# programming language, and doesn’t require devs to have access to actual Sony hardware — so don’t expect a Vita to show up at your door anytime this year. Think you have what it takes to be a Sony dev? Hit up the source link to send ‘em the word.

Row over Lotus name in Formula One finally over as F1 Commission sanction three name changes

Row over Lotus name in Formula One finally over as F1 Commission sanction three name changes

Renault will next season be known as Lotus, Team Lotus will become Caterham and Virgin Racing are to become Marussia.

The changes still need be approved by the World Motor Sport Council, which convenes on December 7, but are unlikely to meet with any resistance. The F1 Commission is made up of 26 members, including FIA president Jean Todt, and is chaired by F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone.

There will be relief in the sport that the bewildering state of affairs as regards the Lotus marque – with both Team Lotus and Lotus Renault claiming it – has been resolved.

The dispute stretches back over two years to when Malaysian entrepreneur Tony Fernandes entered a team called Lotus Racing under licence from British carmaker Group Lotus.

When Group Lotus then revoked the licence and announced a £100 million seven-year sponsorship deal with Renault, with a view to becoming Lotus in a couple of years, Fernandes reverted to the historic Team Lotus name made famous by Colin Chapman.

The new QPR owner claimed to have bought the marque from David Hunt – brother of 1976 world champion James Hunt – although Hunt disputed whether he was ever fully paid for it. With neither side willing to back down, Team Lotus and Group Lotus fought a bitter court battle earlier this year to decide which of them had the rights to the name in Formula One.

Many millions of pounds later a High Court judge did not rule definitively in favour of one side or the other, telling them that Team Lotus could continue to race under that name but that Group Lotus retained the right to use the Lotus marque in F1 if it chose to enter its own team.

Fernandes, however, had by then already launched a backup plan by buying Dartford-based sports car manufacturer Caterham in April.

That led to new talks with Group Lotus, which ended with them submitting the joint request to change their names that was resolved yesterday.

Fernandes will now launch Caterham cars predominantly at the Asian market using the F1 team to push the brand, while Group Lotus will clearly use Formula One to sell its road cars.

There is even speculation that the Renault team’s owners, Luxembourg-based Genii Capital, may have bought Group Lotus from Malaysian manufacturer Proton, thus maintaining a direct interest in both the car manufacturer and the team.

As for Marussia, the Russian sports car manufacturer will now get the profile it hoped to get when it signed as Virgin Racing’s title sponsor last year. It struggled to make any inroads as long as the chassis name was Virgin since that is what commentators and journalists use to describe a team.

Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin brand will remain prominent on the car, with the British entrepreneur having signed a new four-year deal which will see him pay a certain amount in sponsorship, as well as attend a minimum number of races and help the team to find sponsors.

Virgin F1 team seeks name change to Marussia

Virgin Racing want to change their name to Marussia next season to more accurately reflect the Formula One team’s current ownership structure.

F1 team sources told Reuters, on Tuesday, that the request would be put to a meeting of the governing FIA’s Formula One commission in Geneva on Thursday along with others already made by Renault and Team Lotus.

Renault, no longer owned by the French carmaker, want to be renamed Lotus while Team Lotus plan to take the name of niche sportscar maker Caterham.

The changes will require the agreement of 18 of the 26-member commission.

Russian sportscar maker Marussia took a significant stake in Virgin Racing last year and are the title sponsor.

The team, who have yet to score a point since their debut in 2010, compete under a Russian licence and announced a long-term technical partnership with McLaren in July to help them move up the grid.

The Virgin Group run by billionaire Richard Branson, who attended Sunday’s inaugural Indian Grand Prixnear New Delhi  would remain a partner of the British-based team and retain branding on the car.

Son born to Salman Butt minutes before guilty verdict

Former Pakistan cricketer Salman Butt arrives at Southwark Crown Court in central London on November 1, 2011. PHOTO: AFP

LAHORE: The wife of former captain Salman Butt gave birth to a baby boy just minutes before her husband was found guilty Tuesday of a “spot-fixing” betting scam during a match against England.

The 27-year-old’s father told AFP by telephone from Lahore that the baby was born 30 minutes before the verdict, news that was splashed immediately all over Pakistani television stations.

“Salman Butt had a baby boy 30 minutes before the verdict came,” his father, Zulfiqar Butt, told AFP, without giving the baby’s name.

“It’s a matter of great grief for us that Butt has been found guilty. We hope the Almighty will bring him out of this trouble because these are very difficult times for him and the family,” he added.

It is Butt’s first son, he already has a daughter.

The former Test captain was convicted at Southwark Crown Court of conspiracy to obtain and accept corrupt payments and conspiracy to cheat at gambling, while fast bowler Mohammad Asif was found guilty of conspiracy to cheat.

Prosecutors alleged that they conspired with British agent Mazhar Majeed and fast bowler Mohammad Amir to deliver three intentional no-balls during the Lord’s Test between Pakistan and England in August 2010.

The pair were charged after allegations about their involvement in spot-fixing appeared in the now-defunct News of the World tabloid, owned by Australian-born media tycoon Rupert Murdoch, shortly after the Lord’s Test.
