Know the Side Effects for the Blessed Herb, Nigella Sativa

There are many articles on the benefits of Black Seed and Nigella Sativa, but very few articles on the precautions and side effects. This article will address both.

Black Seed, also known as Nigella Sativa and black cumin, has been called the “Blessed Seed” for its miraculous curing ability. The black seed has been called the greatest healing herb of all times by many doctors as it heals all diseases including cancers, diabetes, immune problems, eliminating the flu and colds, acne, muscular dystrophy, back aches, skin and stomach disorders and it increases longevity.

As with the flu remedy, the recommended dosage includes the use of garlic and olive leaf. Some dosage requirements suggest one teaspoon of oil compared to eating the regular seeds. Please note that the seeds are the Prophetic medicine, not the oils. The oils were not available 2000 years. So when Prophet Mohammad stated, “Use this seed often, as it is a cure for all except death.” He meant seeds and not the oils.

The oils are concentrated and more and more people prefer the convenience of the oils, but they must be taken differently than the seeds. Black Seed although miraculous, with its many health benefits, still must have some precautions stated.

Side Effects of Black Seeds

There are no known side effects of this miraculous herb, but it is better to take caution here. Black Seed has been reported to be toxic in the amount of 25 grams or more. But who in the world would take that amount? The maximum dosage for any cure is 3 teaspoons per day. Some sites are telling people to take a large amount of the oil, to sell more products. Follow the suggested dosage requirements, and see that more is not necessary and more does not heal quicker.

Warnings of Black Seeds

Never take the oil on a full stomach. It needs to be mixed with another liquid such as juice, yogurt or honey and taken one hour before the meal. If taking the oil twice in a day, then the oil should be mixed with honey or juice and taken before bedtime.

If taking the seeds, they must be heated. Never take the seeds that have not been heated as they will upset the stomach.

How to Heat the Seeds

Place one fourth of the seeds in a skillet on low heat. Use only one fourth of the seeds in case the seeds are burned. Stir the seeds every few minutes and keep tasting the seeds until they loose their tart taste. The seeds must be bland. The seeds should pop slightly. Remove them from the heat and let them cool. Place the desired amount in a coffee grinder and grind. Place the desired seeds in vegetarian capsules or in honey.

How to Mix the Seeds with the Honey

Fill a pint jar with the ground black seeds and add in one fourth a jar of honey. Mix the honey and the black seeds well. Keep adding a little honey at a time until the honey and black seeds are mixed well. It needs to be a very thick consistency. The mixture will thicken more over night. It is very delicious and a sweet treat. Suggested dosage is one teaspoon a day. Do not give the honey mixture to diabetic patients.

Precautions for the Use of Black Seeds

  1. It is not suggested for pregnant women to take black seeds.
  2. If the patient has a major disease, they need to be monitored by a doctor as black seeds will cause your blood pressure to drop.
  3. Never mix black seeds with pharmaceutical medicines. Some sites are stating the opposite, but it is not a Prophetic Cure when the “Blessed Seed” is mixed with another ingredient not prescribed by Prophet Mohammad.
  4. The cure only works with faith and sincerity. Not believing in the cure is the same as not having a cure at all.

Black seed or Nigella Sativa is a cure and treatment for many illness, but only when the person follows the exact directions. No treatment will work with trying to combine it with other protocols. Look for the best quality seeds and prepare them as suggested.

Exactly How Much Nigella Sativa Should Be Taken Daily

With the thousands of sites on the internet selling Black Seed (also know as Nigella Sativa), whose advice should be followed for the proper dosage for each disease?

Black Seed is an herb that has been used for over 2000 years for many diseases. It is also known as Nigella Sativa, black cumin, haba al-baraka and kalonji. Do not confuse black caraway with black seed, as they come from two different plants.

There are many sites selling Black seeds now, with the recent news of its cancer curing abilities. The news is that black seeds kills tumor cells of Pancreatic cancers. The health benefits of black seeds are numerous.

Black seed was originally used to cure migraines and headaches thousands of years ago. As the word spread of its healing abilities, the black seed became known as the miracle cure. There is much information on what Prophet Mohammad said, but little on how use the seeds properly.

Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah’s beloved Prophet (PBUH) saying ”There is healing in Black Seed for all diseases except death.”

This article is to inform everyone of the suggested dosage. A few things to keep in mind. Using more black seed does not heal the person faster. Beware of companies selling the blessed seed that suggest large quantities and if using the whole seeds, they need to be heated first.

How to Prepare the Seeds

The seeds have a harsh taste and will burn the stomach if the seeds are not heated first. Place the seeds on low heat and stir them every few minutes. Taste the seeds to see when the flavor becomes very bland. After the tartness is removed, take the pan from the heat. Grind what is needed in a coffee grinder and place in vegetarian capsules.

Cancers and Tumors

Take 1 teaspoon of the oil mixed with one teaspoon of raw honey twice a day. This mixture should be taken one hour before breakfast and before sleeping at night. Also take 4-5 cloves of garlic daily or 1 teaspoon of dried garlic powder mixed with honey.

Cystic Fibrosis

Massage the chest with the black seed oil. Drink one teaspoon of the oil mixed with honey, three times a day.

Diabetes

Use the black seed oil mixed with raw honey twice a day. A change in diet is a must with little carbohydrates and no sugar.

Diarrhea

Mix one teaspoon of the black seed oil with a cup of yogurt and drink twice a day.

Dry Cough

1/2 teaspoon of the oil mixed with coffee twice a day. Rub the oil on your back and chest.

Earache

Take one teaspoon of the black seeds that have been heated and smash. Add a few drops of olive oil to the black seeds and mix well. Place 7 drops into a syringe and place in the ear morning and evening until well.

Eye Disease and Impaired Vision

Rub the eyelids and the sides of the eye orbits half an hour before going to bed with black seed oil. A half tablespoon of the black seed oil should also be drunk with a cup of carrot juice.

Facial Paralysis

Place one teaspoon of the oil in a liter of boiling water and inhale the fumes.

Flu and Colds

Take one teaspoon of black seed oil with honey in the morning before eating. Also, place a few drops in each nostril for nasal congestion.

Gallstones and Liver Stones

Place a large spoon of black seeds mixed with honey in a glass, add in some hot water. Finally add in one teaspoon of oil. Drink this mixture daily, first thing in the morning.

General Health and Well Being

Take one spoon of honey and one spoon of black seeds mixed every day or 1/2 spoon of the oil mixed with honey before your breakfast.

Hair Loss and Premature Graying

Wash your hair and then apply liberal amounts of olive oil and black seed oil mixed together. Wait one hour and rinse.

Headaches and Migraines

Take the black seed oil and rub on the temples. Place a few drops in the nostrils and also place some oil on top of the head. Eat some black seeds and honey, two times a day.

Memory

Take 1/2 teaspoon of black seed and 1/2 teaspoon of honey three times a day.

Mouth Infection Virus

Place some black seeds in your mouth and leave for 10-15 minutes.

Muscular Dystrophy

Take one spoon of black seeds mixed with honey, three times a day. Eat as many raisins as possible. Eat a soup of morrow (soup bones) every day.

Rheumatic and Back Pain

Heat some of the black seed oil and rub on the area of pain. Eat some black seeds and honey daily.

Stomach Pain

Take one big spoon of black seeds mixed with honey. Drink some peppermint tea, then drink the water of boiled rice if hungry.

Toothache and Gum infections

Place some black seeds in a cup of vinegar and bring to boil. When the vinegar has cooled to a warm touch, rinse the mouth with this mixture.

Worms

Heat 2 teaspoons of black seeds with 1/2 cup of vinegar. Heat this mixture and then with a brush, brush the mixture on the stomach and liver area. Do this before you are about to sleep. Do not wipe this mixture off.

Before sleeping eat 7 dates to get rid of ascaris worms.

The miracle of this blessed seed is in the belief of the cure. Thousands use this seed with success daily, but it is necessary to take the seed on a regular basis and then when the person comes down with the disease, it is easily cured.

Anyone wanting to substitute the ground seed for the oil may do so at a ratio of two and one half teaspoons to one teaspoon of the oil. The ground seeds are what was used by Prophet Mohammad.

Rub the oil on the spots of baldness.

Massage the oil into the beard reaching all the roots.

Bee and Wasp Stings

Boil some ground black seed and water and apply to the stings.

Cardiovascular Problems

Take 1/2 teaspoon of the oil mixed with hot water daily. Drink this first thing in the morning.

Complexion

Mix black seeds and olive oil and clean the face with this mixture. This will redden the complexion. Rinse the face well after one hour.

Gas

Take one teaspoon of the black seeds mixed with one teaspoon of honey before breakfast.

Hemorrhoids

Take some black seed and water and drink.

Hypertension or High Blood Pressure

Take one half teaspoon of the oil each day mixed in some hot water. Eat plenty of garlic and get lots of sunshine.

Immune System:

Take one half tablespoon of the black seed oil three times a day.

Increase the Flow of Milk in Breast Feeding

Mix two tablespoons of ground black seeds and two tablespoons of honey together. Add in 1/2 teaspoon of the black seed oil and eat this daily.

Moles

Apply a mixture of black seeds and water and apply to the mole.

Mosquitoes and Bugs

Burn some black seed oil in an incense burner and drive the bugs away.

Nose and Throat Inflammation

Take one half teaspoon of the oil with some lemon juice. Make a vapor with some oil and hot water and inhale the fumes.

Vomiting

Mix one half teaspoon of ginger juice mixed with one half teaspoon of black seed oil.

It is very important to read part one first, as it has some extremely good information on cancer and diabetes. The cure will not work unless the whole protocol is followed. Such as preparing the seeds properly and taking the oil on an empty stomach.

There are very many internet sites selling black seed oil and the seeds. Mountain Rose herbs has one of the highest rating, but of course there is no guarantee by the writer. Look not only to the price, but the quality of the product. Do not buy from any company stating that it is black caraway. These are two different plants. Look for companies that state it is black cumin, nigella sativa, haba al-baraka or kalonji.

As always be careful not to take a large amount of black seeds as it can be toxic in amounts exceeding 25 grams. Follow the recommended dosage and always use the best quality seeds you can find. The most expensive, does not mean the best seeds. Nor does the cheapest seeds mean they are the worse.

Remember to take black seed everyday for well being and then if a disease strikes, a small amount of black seed will suffice.

Nigella Sativa seeds are fairly inexpensive and can be obtained from many sources but many companies do not have the same quality.

If you buy the organic seeds that have not been prepared, you must heat them to get rid of the bitterness and the hotness. This is a very simple procedure, but you must take precautions and do a small amount at a time, till you understand the process completely. Take a small portion of the seeds and place them in a heavy bottom skillet. Turn the gas or electric burner on low and heat slightly, stirring constantly. You must keep tasting them until the hotness is gone. When the seeds are very bland, remove them from the stove. Be careful not to burn them as they do burn easily. After they have finished, place them in a coffee grinder or blender and mulch to a very fine powder. This powder can be put in honey at this time or in vegetarian capsules. Always use vegetarian capsules, as gelatin is made from pork.

To make the mixture with honey, fill the jar halfway up with honey and then begin adding small amount of the black seed mixture at a time. Keep stirring the honey and black seeds and add till the top is almost full. You want the mixture to be a very thick consistency. By the next day, the honey and black seed mixture will be thick, almost like candy – extremely delicious. You will have no problem eating your minimum of 2 teaspoons per day.

Note: Nigella Sativa is toxic in high doses, so moderation is the key here. Nigella Sativa will increase your energy and take away your fatigue. Never take the oil on a full stomach as it will cause you distress.

Black Cumin (Nigella sativa)

September 4 2007 post, titled “A Cure For Every Disease Except Death.” The title of my post is the translation of an ancient saying (which I loved!) referring to a common Islamic belief that the black cumin seed plant, or Nigella sativa or blackseed, a member of the buttercup family (the Ranunculaceae family), is a panacea for every ailment except aging and death. And everything that I read online yesterday and this morning on different websites would seem to confirm the extraordinary and wide-ranging healing properties of this plant.

Wikipedia, for instance, informs us that Nigella sativa has been used for centuries, both as a herb and pressed into oil, by people in Asia, Middle East, and Africa for medicinal purposes. It has been traditionally used for a variety of conditions and treatments related to respiratory health, stomach and intestinal health, kidney and liver function, circulatory and immune system support, and for general overall well-being. In Islam, it is regarded as one of the greatest forms of healing medicine available.

So here we have a plant extract that was and is used to treat ailments ranging from asthma to diarrhea, from skin diseases to nervous disorders, high blood pressure, diabetes, worms and parasites. Nigella sativa has antifungal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities, and also allegedly strengthens the immune system, cleanses the body, purifies the blood, improves blood circulation, and helps us live longer. Strengthens the immune system? Purifies the blood? Helps us live longer? Sounds too good to be true. Ahhh, but this is just the beginning.

In the past few decades Nigella sativa has been under scrutiny for its anti-cancer potential. Nope, unfortunately I found no black cumin – myeloma studies. But I am still looking! Here follows a selection of the many studies examining the effects of Nigella sativa and its various extracts on cancer.

A June 2007 study (abstract: http://tinyurl.com/2zksw6), which I was lucky enough to get my hands on, thanks to a good friend (grazie!), informs us that “Nigella sativa has immunopotentiation and antihistaminic, antidiabetic, anti-hypertensive, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities. [...] Furthermore, blackseed preparations may have a cancer chemopreventive potential and may reduce the toxicity of standard antineoplastic drugs.”

The study looked at the in vitro and in vivo (mice) potential of different extracts of Nigella sativa seeds against several tumour cell lines. The essential oil injected directly into solid tumours inhibited their development, and even decreased their volume after 30 days of treatment. The study concludes: “Our results indicate for the first time that intra-tumor treatment of tumor-bearing mice with essential oil may have led to the inhibition of metastasis development [...]. These results demonstrate either that the essential oil has an anti-metastatic activity in mice or that it inhibits or delays metastasis by rapid reduction of primary tumor volume at the site of induction. [...] The present study demonstrates that the cytotoxic activity of blackseed extracts is a complex phenomenon depending not only on the nature of the extract and its components, but also on the tumor cell type.”

An August 2007 study published in “Cancer Research” (http://tinyurl.com/266rlg) examines the in vitro and in vivo effects of one of Nigella sativa’s active compounds, thymoquinone, on prostate cancer, concluding that it may prove to be effective in treating hormone-sensitive as well as hormone-refractory prostate cancer. Furthermore, because of its selective effect on cancer cells, we believe that thymoquinone can also be used safely to help prevent the development of prostate cancer. The cytotoxicity of Nigella sativa purified extracts, thymoquinone (TQ) and dithymoquinone (DIM), against a variety of tumour cells had already been examined in 1998 (http://tinyurl.com/33woyf). With very good results, I should add.

A 2005 article (http://tinyurl.com/2u9arx) mentions “the protective effects of TQ and the volatile oil against the nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity induced by either disease or chemicals. The seeds/oil have antiinflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, antimicrobial and antineoplastic activity. The oil decreases blood pressure and increases respiration. Treatment of rats with the seed extract for up to 12 weeks has been reported to induce changes in the haemogram that include an increase in both the packed cell volume (PCV) and haemoglobin (Hb), and a decrease in plasma concentrations of cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose.” Well, all this is truly remarkable, to say the least.

As I do with all the substances on my research list, I checked to see if there was any mention of clinical trials. I was actually not surprised to find only ONE (see: http://tinyurl.com/34kv6e), which tested Nigella sativa on dyslipidemia, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. No cancer trials. Not one! This sounds all too familiar, unfortunately. (Big sigh.)

My own experience with Nigella sativa. My interest in this remarkable plant was sparked at the beginning of 2006, after I read that black cumin seeds had been found in the tomb of Tutankhamen (how about that for a fascinating historical detail?). That reminds me: I have not yet mentioned that the seeds are used in Middle Eastern cooking to flavour breads, cakes, and even alcoholic beverages. And oh, by the way, Nigella sativa should not be confused with the herb and spice known as cumin, which is a member of the parsley family (I made that mistake until I looked it up). In April, I took black cumin oil capsules, a total of two grams a day, then I ran out of them and didn’t place another order since by then I had flaxseed oil capsules. However, I wonder if the black cumin oil might have had a positive effect on my good IgG increase in June ? And possibly on the improvement in my rosacea? Hard to say, now. I wasn’t paying much attention to these oil capsules at the time, I confess, since I hadn’t done much research at that point and was using them mainly to enhance curcumin bioavailability. Well, after what I have read in the past two days, I will reorder black cumin oil capsules and test them as a holistic remedy. Soon. In fact, I am going to see if I can grow the plant in my back yard with the rest of my herbs. My Nigella sativa story doesn’t end here!

Update. May 20 2008 post: Today’s Science Daily (http://tinyurl.com/42pofz) has an interesting report on Nigella sativa, also known as black cumin. The black cumin seed plant is a member of the buttercup family and is a highly regarded medicinal plant in Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

Back to Science Daily. Researchers at Thomas Jefferson University recently discovered that an extract of Nigella sativa, called thymoquinone, blocked pancreatic cancer cell growth and killed the cells via apoptosis.

After adding thymoquinone to pancreatic cancer cells, the researchers observed increased levels of p53 and Bax, both cancer cell killers, as well as decreased levels of Bcl-2, a protein that instead blocks apoptosis. For more technical details please go read the article.

So even though I am working on a different topic right now, this article motivated me to have a quick look around to see what else I could find.

An interesting abstract published in 2006 (see:http://tinyurl.com/4srow5) deals with the effects of Nigella sativa on rats who had been injected with cadmium. Well, the rats that were treated also with Nigella sativa fared much better than the others: their red and white blood cell counts and haemoglobin were higher, for instance. This is actually the real reason I decided to mention this study: if your haemoglobin and red and white blood cell counts are low, you might consider taking this supplement. Nigella sativa also increased the lowered insulin levels and neutrophils of the rats, and decreased their elevated heart rate and glucose concentration. So, good stuff!

Since Sherlock and I have been doing our experiments together, I have stopped taking Nigella sativa. But I will resume taking it over the summer as soon as our current experiment ends. My RBC and WBC counts are low, albeit still within the normal range. My haemoglobin is also within the normal range but I would love to bring it up a bit.
