Shah Rukh Khan’s technolgical masterpiece RA.One, one of the most expensive films made in India, has recovered its costs by earning Rs 170 crore worldwide in the opening weekend. The superstar is congratulating his business partners on the superhero’s box office success.

Eros International Media Ltd (Eros International) released the collection report stating that the film has got a record breaking opening – the highly anticipated Diwali collected of Rs 137.25 crore (net collection Rs 96 crore) in India and Rs 32.75 crore overseas.

Apart from this, Shah Rukh Khan had reportedly sold the satellite rights for Rs 37 crore, the music rights for Rs 8 crore and ancillary rights for Rs 10 crore even before the film had hit the screens.

“As always, my heart doesn’t crunch numbers and heroes don’t count zeros…but it’s nice to know how RA.One is flying,” he further tweeted.

“Ga Ga ooh la la…Ra Ra Ra.One. Thrilled with response. Congratulations to my business partners.”

Made at a budget of Rs 150 crore, the film, described as best in terms of technology, opened across more than 4,000 plus screens worldwide – 3,100 plus screens in India and 904 prints internationally, including 3D and has become the biggest Hindi grosser in southern market too.

“RA.One released to packed houses across the country on Diwali day and has already created history by taking over the mantle of the biggest domestic earner so far. The film continues to be on its record breaking spree with several new achievements since its release. It has touched the highest individual collection in circuits such as Mumbai, Delhi, Punjab and Rajasthan,” Nandu Ahuja, senior vice president, distribution, Eros International Media Ltd said in a statement.

“We see repeat viewings of the movie with the 3-D version being equally sought after. With the Eid holiday also coming up next week and no other major film release, we are anticipating the film to continue doing huge numbers,” he added.

Speaking on the film’s overseas performance, Pranab Kapadia, president, distribution, Eros International, said: “The film is enjoying a superb run across all major regions including UK, North America, Europe, Australia and the Middle East. Overseas, the film has broken SRK’s own previous first weekend record established by My Name Is Khan and occupies the position of biggest Indian first weekend grosser overseas as well.”

Eros plans to take the film to non-traditional markets – RA.One is scheduled for theatrical release in the first quarter of 2012 across several territories including South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Russia , Lebanon, Jordan, Syria and Palestine, Brazil, Spain, Italy and Greece .

Directed by Anubhav Sinha, RA.One saw King Khan as G.One along with Arjun Rampal as RA.One and Kareena Kapoor.

Turkey To Host Meeting On Afghan Security, Economy

ISTANBUL (AP) — Diplomats are campaigning this week for a stable Afghanistan after the planned withdrawal of international combat forces by the end of 2014, a goal imperiled by militant attacks, a weak Afghan government and the conflicting interests of regional players.

International delegates were converging on Istanbul on Tuesday before the conference on security and economic development in Afghanistan against a backdrop of high-profile assaults in the Kabul area in the last few months.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai and President Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan met ahead of the regional conference on Wednesday amid tension over Afghan and U.S. demands that Pakistan do more to curb militant activity and sanctuaries on its territory. Pakistan denies it shelters or supports the Haqqani network, a Taliban wing blamed for an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Kabul in September and other deadly operations.

Karzai urged “all countries in the region (to) cooperate with each other with honesty,” in the face of threats, a statement from Karzai’s office said.

“If that happens, all countries in the region can overcome their problems,” his office quoted Karzai as saying.

Karzai’s office said Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkey were also scheduled “to discuss practical ways to implement steps toward better cooperation.” Interior ministers as well as military chiefs from the three countries were expected to hold separate discussions to enhance cooperation, it said.

The title of the meeting Wednesday is “Security and Cooperation in the Heart of Asia,” yet diplomats in Afghanistan, regional countries and the West have downplayed expectations.

Fourteen regional countries are to be represented: Afghanistan, China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenisan, Uzbekistan and the United Arab Emirates.

Germany, France and other Western countries with troops deployed in Afghanistan were sending envoys to show support at Wednesday’s conference. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton had planned to attend, but canceled her trip because her mother is ill.

Iran, at odds with the international community over its nuclear program, is sending its deputy foreign minister, Mohammad Ali Fathollahi.

“The Istanbul conference is an opportunity for us in Afghanistan and the region to give real meaning to a slogan that has been repeated around for many, many years — that Afghanistan’s peace and prosperity are connected to the peace and prosperity of the region,” Afghan deputy foreign minister, Jawed Ludin, said this month.

Turkey’s NTV television said Afghanistan and Pakistan are expected to sign cooperation agreements, including conducting joint military drills.

But Afghanistan’s broader aims were not likely to be achieved in Turkey.

The war-weary nation wants countries to sign confidence-building measures, such as exchanging information on defense spending and numbers of troops deployed on borders; visiting military bases; pledging not to violate territorial integrity or interfere in the internal affairs of sovereign states; relaxing visa requirements; expanding trade; and cooperating on border management.

A senior U.S. administration official said the regional countries were expected to reiterate a commitment to sovereignty, endorse a transition to Afghan security leadership, endorse Afghan efforts for a political solution to the war and help Afghanistan develop a sustainable economy.

The official briefed reporters on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the discussions.

Clinton was in Pakistan earlier this month to press the nation to send its army after militants the U.S. says get special protection from the Pakistani government, while making the case that Pakistan should use its influence with Taliban militants to encourage peace in Afghanistan.

Pakistan has deployed 170,000 soldiers to its eastern border with Afghanistan and more than 3,000 soldiers have died in battles with militants. Pakistani leaders bristle at U.S. criticism that they have not done enough or that they play a double game, fighting militants in some areas and supporting them in others where they might be useful proxies in a future conflict with India, its archenemy.

Passing Lokpal Bill, not agitation, priority of BJP

New Delhi: In the wake of Anna Hazare’s letter to the Prime Minister on the Lokpal issue, BJP on Tuesday indicated that its priority now is to perform the role of a “constructive and active” opposition in Parliament to pass the legislation in the winter session.

Asked about its response to Hazare’s letter in which he has threatened to launch a fresh agitation if the Government fails to pass the Lokpal Bill in the Winter Session of Parliament, the main Opposition said dealing with the issue is the responsibility of the government.

“BJP will work actively in the Standing Committee dealing with the Lokpal Bill. We are committed to supporting the government in bringing a Bill for an effective and strong Lokpal,” party spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said.

The main Opposition maintained that whatever amends were to be made in the Bill should be made through the democratic process – in the Standing Committee and in Parliament.

As far as dealing with Hazare and his team is concerned, BJP said it was hopeful the government will act in a responsible manner.

Government wonders why Team Anna keep issuing warnings

NEW DELHI: The government on Tuesday wondered why Team Anna keeps on issuing warnings when the Centre has repeatedly announced its commitment to bring a strongLokpal Bill at the earliest.

“This has been said by Anna and his associates many times. Before campaigning against Congress in Hisar also, they had said that they would compel the government to bring Lokpal bill… I do not know why they are making such statements when there is no need to compel the government for it,” information and broadcasting minister Ambika Soni told reporters here.

She was responding to questions on Hazare’s letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today in which he threatened to resume his fast on the last day of Parliament’s winter session if the government fails to get a strong Jan Lokpal Billpassed by then.

“A number of Cabinet ministers and the Prime Minister himself has said that we all want to a powerful Lokpal Bill. Standing committee examining is also speeding up its work in this direction by holding extra sittings.

“There is no indication that there will be any delay in bringing the bill. When the government has reiterated its commitment to the bill so many times, I fail to understand what is the reason for their issuing warnings frequently,” Soni said.

In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the 74-year-old activist said he did not find it right that responsible people in government and Congress were making remarks that creates doubts about the passage of the bill.
